Why Staying Vigilant Matters: Crime Statistics Highlight Rising Risks in South Wales
Recent crime statistics published by the Home Office have drawn renewed attention to security concerns in South Wales — with Newport emerging as the area facing the highest crime rates in the country.
According to the data, Newport recorded 121 offences per 1,000 people, equating to roughly one crime for every eight residents. This places Newport ahead of all other areas in Wales, with Blaenau Gwent following closely at 118 crimes per 1,000 people, and Cardiff registering 106. These figures sharply contrast with the national average for Wales, which stands at 85.4 crimes per 1,000 people.
The most reported crimes in Newport include violent and sexual offences, with 6,466 incidents logged in 2023. Anti-social behaviour and burglary remain significant issues too, with 292 and 53 incidents, respectively, reported in just January 2024 alone.
Across Wales, the trend reflects growing concerns. The four police forces in Wales — Gwent Police, South Wales Police, Dyfed-Powys Police, and North Wales Police — recorded 261,000 crimes in the 12 months leading up to September 2024. Nationally, over five million crimes (excluding fraud) were logged across England and Wales in the same period.
While some types of crime, such as computer misuse, have declined, there have been notable increases in theft, knife-related crime, robbery, and violence.
