New security legislation results in major investment for Rougemont School

SECUREIT, a leading fire prevention and security solutions provider has completed a significant security upgrade at Rougemont School near Newport. The work was commissioned by this long standing provider of private education in south Wales in response to the forthcoming legislative recommendations of Martyn’s Law.

John Reid, Head of Business Development for SECUREIT explained that the implications of the new law that prompted this significant investment in pupil and visitor safety by the school:

“The need for this comprehensive security enhancement was driven by Martyn’s Law, a new legislative initiative that mandates UK organisations which cross a capacity threshold, to implement stringent security measures in areas and spaces that are accessible to the public. Named in honour of Martyn Hett, one of the victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena attack, Martyn’s Law imposes a duty of care on organisations, particularly those managing large venues, to ensure that robust security protocols are in place to protect the public, including pupils, parents and other visitors to premises such as schools”.

Rougemont School recognised the importance of upgrading its security infrastructure to meet new security standards soon to be required by many publicly accessible organisations. The school engaged SECUREIT to deliver a bespoke security solution that not only complies with the new legislation, but also enhances the overall safety and peace of mind for students, staff, and all visitors to its growing multi-building campus set in nearly 90 acres of land.

Paul Rich, Director of Operations for Rougemont School, said: “The project was a strategic investment in the school’s physical infrastructure which means that its facilities management provision has achieved the same high standards expected of its academic departments”.

He continued: “The security upgrade involved the installation of remote controlled motorised gates, state-of-the-art CCTV systems, advanced AI-powered monitoring tools, and additional access control measures. These improvements provide the school with real-time surveillance, immediate threat detection, and efficient response mechanisms, all of which are crucial for educational establishments in today’s evolving legislative landscape”.

Philip Popham, SCUREIT’s Managing Director added: “We are proud to have partnered with Rougemont School on this critical project. Our team worked closely with the school’s governing body, headtecher and management team to design and implement a security solution that not only meets the requirements of Martyn’s Law, but also reflects the school’s commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for the full spectrum of the community that it is proud to serve.”

The project, completed in just under three months, underscores SECUREIT’s commitment to enhancing safety and security in publicly accessible venues and education institutions, ensuring their compliance with the latest UK regulatory standards.
