After two months of contraction, May’s figures showed a renewed and solid rise in Welsh private sector output. The Wales Business Activity Index rose to 51.5, up from 48.1 in April. This figure—based on a seasonally adjusted measure of the region’s manufacturing and service output—is the joint-strongest uptick in the last 12 months, and a welcome signal that growth is returning.

While it’s true that new business demand remains subdued—marking the sixth month of consecutive declines—this positive change in activity offers hope for the year ahead. Although output expectations have dipped slightly due to ongoing uncertainty, the signs of recovery are encouraging.
