SECUREIT, the south Wales based CCTV, fire prevention and security solutions provider, has issued renewed advice and guidance for golf club owners following a series of attempted break ins and reported thefts at golf clubs this summer.
Running a successful golf course comes with its own set of security challenges, particularly concerning the protection of assets and facilities against theft, vandalism, and other forms of criminal activity. From expensive greenkeeping equipment to fleets of buggies, golf courses can be vulnerable targets for burglaries and security breaches. In recent years a Gloucestershire golf club had £20,000 worth of trophies stolen, and a member of staff was held responsible for a south coast golf club loss of more than £100,000.
In a survey of golf club managers around the company’s headquarters near Bridgend, the following came back as the three main concerns that are keeping the club managers awake at night:
Top of the list was equipment theft. Golf courses house valuable equipment such as golf carts, grounds maintenance machinery, and high-end clubs. These items are attractive targets for thieves looking to make a quick profit.
Next came property vandalism. Vandals may trespass onto the course grounds, causing damage to greens, tee boxes, and other infrastructure. Graffiti and intentional destruction of property can tarnish the reputation of the course and incur significant repair costs. Public rights of way through many privately owned golf courses are an additional challenge for the sector to monitor and manage.
And finally, the possibility of the burglary of the clubhouse was a key concern. Clubhouses often contain expensive furnishings, electronics, and cash from pro shop sales and in bar tills. Burglars may target these facilities, especially during off-hours when personnel presence is minimal.
SECUREIT are advising savvy golf club managers to utilise a range of tech based solutions to ensure that members and visitors alike enjoy a safe and trouble free visit to the fairways and clubhouses of south Wales:
Ensure the use of the most up-to-date surveillance systems. Consider the use of high-quality CCTV cameras strategically across the course, clubhouse, and storage areas. Ensure adequate lighting to deter intruders and facilitate clear video footage for identification purposes.
Implement an access control system across the club. Use this to restrict access to sensitive areas with key card or even a biometric entry systems. Limit the number of keys issued and regularly audit access logs to detect any unauthorized entry attempts.
Just like you would do at home, ensure secure equipment storage. Store golf carts, maintenance machinery, and other equipment in locked sheds or garages when not in use. Consider installing GPS tracking devices on valuable items for easy recovery in case of theft.
And finally, enhance any physical barriers. Erect fences or hedges around the perimeter of the property to deter unauthorized entry. Secure windows and doors with robust locks, and consider installing shatterproof glass to prevent break-ins.
Phil Popham, managing director of SECUREIT said:
“By implementing these proactive security measures, golf course owners and managers can significantly reduce the likelihood of theft, vandalism, and other security breaches, safeguarding both assets and reputation in the process. Constant vigilance and adaptation to the emerging threats to golf courses across south Wales are key to maintaining a secure environment for both patrons and staff”.
