SECUREIT Urges South Wales Businesses to Prioritise Fire Prevention Measures this Winter
SECUREIT, a leading fire prevention and security solutions provider based in Bridgend, is calling on all business owners to urgently review their fire safety arrangements to protect their properties, employees, and livelihoods this winter.
The devastating fires that ravaged commercial premises across south Wales in 2024, serve as a stark reminder of the importance of robust fire prevention measures. This year has seen an alarming number of destructive fires in South Wales including:
- January:A severe fire at the Wern Industrial Estate in Rogerstone near Newport led to the complete destruction of at least one building.
- January: A major warehouse fire at Owens Group on Bridgend Industrial Estate caused significant damage.
- July: Ron Skinner and Sons car dealership in Tredegar was engulfed by a massive blaze, with flames and smoke visible for miles.
- November: A charity shop fire in Abergavenny town centre forced evacuations and left the premises devastated.
- December: A large fire at an industrial estate in Tremorfa in Cardiff prompted warnings for residents to keep windows and doors closed as fire crews from ten south Wales stations battled the blaze.
Each incident highlights the unpredictable and destructive nature of fire, underscoring the need for businesses to take proactive steps to minimize risk. And never more so than during the winter months when buildings can be filled with more flammable items than usual, and people reach for seasonal heaters and decorative candles.
“Fire prevention is not just about compliance with regulations; it is about safeguarding your future,” said Philip Popham, Managing Director of SECUREIT. “The tragic fire-related events in South Wales this year demonstrate just how quickly fire can disrupt lives and businesses. It is vital for business owners to prioritise fire safety before disaster strikes.”
SECUREIT recommends that all businesses:
- Conduct Regular Fire Risk Assessments: Identify potential hazards and implement strategies to mitigate them.
- Install and Maintain Fire Detection Systems: Ensure that smoke alarms, heat detectors, and sprinkler systems are up-to-date and in working order.
- Implement a Fire Response Plan: Train employees on evacuation procedures and ensure clear access to exits.
- Invest in Fire-Resistant Materials: Use materials that reduce the spread of fire within the premises.
- Secure a Reliable Fire Prevention Partner: Partner with professionals for ongoing advice, monitoring, and maintenance.
Philip Popham added, “Fortunately many business owners understand that fire prevention is an investment, not an expense. By taking action now, you can prevent loss of life, property, and income in the future. Having the right systems in place is essential over the Christmas holiday season when premises may have fewer people around who can visually detect fire risks. In December last year, a major fire engulfed units at Treforest Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Cardiff. Unfortunately fire has no respect for seasonal celebrations and business shut downs”.
